4 Steps To Success in BITSAT 2018

where the magic happens

We all know that while studying for highly competitive examinations like JEE main, JEE advanced and BITSAT 2018, the students are often asked to cram up thousands of questions along with learning new chapters at break neck speed. It is a commonly held belief among students, parents and teachers that this is the only way one can crack JEE or qualify in IITs, NIITs or BITs. Hence there is a mad rush towards a coaching market like Kota.

What we as parents and teachers do not know that this type of rote learning creates a ripple effect on how they think and lead their lives later on even if they go on to become an IITian. They are devoid of enthusiasm of learning something new and also of excitement of reaching a desired level of expertise in any field or walk of life. This shows in their being evaluated low on employability scale.

So can there be a method to this madness called JEE preparation ? —— Yes there can be!

Can a student enjoy learning and still reach a level to become competitive enough to give the other examinees a run for their money?  —— Yes any student can!

Can this system of highly competitive entrance tests give us people who become analytical thinkers and doers in their respective workspaces irrespective of whether they have cleared these tests or not? —— Yes it surely can!

Let us now understand the how behind all these answers.

Josh Kaufman who specializes in teaching people from all walks of life on how to master practical knowledge and skills has authored a book “The first 20 hours — how to learn anything”. In this he explains that in order to become good at doing a thing, be it anything from riding a bike, to playing Counter Strike, to learning a completely new chapter of Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics, one only needs to devote 20 dedicated hours into learning it.

So what this implies is that any student, ‘weak’ or ‘bright’, have an equal chance of becoming good at solving questions because solving question is also a skill that needs to be cultivated and mastered.

The steps of the process by which this goal can be achieved are

1)    Step 1 :-  Deconstructing the goal

The student should be able to break down the skill of problem solving into smaller skills or goals like concept learning, concept application, concept retention, practicing, time management etc.. All these goals are important for attaining the final goal of solving a question of a particular difficulty level in an acceptable amount of time.

 2)   Step 2 :- Learn enough to self-correct

Do not wait for the blue moon. Start Now! The student should remove the traits like ‘student syndrome’, procrastination etc. from their behaviour. There should be a conscious effort towards converting a fixed mindset into a growth mindset, by making subtle changes in the thought process and actions. Start the process of learning and self-correcting simultaneously, as we learn more from our failures and mistakes than our successes.

 3)   Step 3 :-  Removing practice barriers

Remove all the distractions or impediments in your progress. Use your willpower to remove the distractions and actually sit down to practice.

4)   Step 4 :-  Targeted practice at least 20 hours

Do not stop practicing even if you know that you are incompetent to solve a question of a particular chapter, because as you go on practicing your level of expertise will increase. Our biggest barrier to learning a new skill is giving up at the start because we are afraid of our initial stupidity and failures due to the lack of knowledge. So pre-commit to practicing for 20 hours so that this initial barrier is overcome and we move up the scale of expertise.

Let us contemplate this quote for a moment “The major barrier to learning a new thing or skill is not intellectual…it’s emotional”

What this implies is that we all have the same intellectual level to start learning and acquiring a new skill but not all of us are able to learn it. The reason is because we are afraid to learn new things because we do not like to look stupid of not being able to perform a skill like solving a problem from the very beginning. Hence it is not the intellectual level which makes a weak or a bright student, but it is the emotional barriers which create this distinction. Overcome this barrier and you will become a bright student.

DoPrep has come up with a 1 year online contact program for JEE 2019 and BITSAT 2018 preparation which extensively uses the 4 step process required to master a skill like solving problems of a particular chapter within 20 hours.
